How can I remove a tick?
Your main goal is to remove the tick quickly, remove all parts of the tick's body and to prevent against the release of its saliva or regurgitation of its gastric contents in your pet's body or your own body.
Start by cleaning the forceps with an antiseptic. After removing the tick, clean the bitten part and the tool with an antiseptic and wash your hands thoroughly.
Keep the tick in a container in case a doctor asks for proof that you have been bitten (label and date).

WARNING
DO NOT squeeze the tick's body, as this could cause the head and body to separate, leaving the head to fit under the skin which could lead to Lyme disease or piroplasmosis, etc.
DO NOT use your fingernails to remove a tick: Risk of infection if there is a lesion near your fingernails.
DO NOT crush the tick, this may cause regurgitation of its gastric contents which may become infected.
DO NOT try to burn it, or apply petroleum jelly, nail polish or any other chemicals. None of these methods can destroy the tick, but on the contrary provoke the release of the tick's saliva.
Be aware that the engorged tick may potentially contain infected blood, which can splash when crushed.
Risk of onset of Lyme disease, piroplasmosis, etc.
